I wanted to resurrect a technical solution I wrote a while back, as I had this question come up a few times in the last couple of weeks.
You may find the issue presenting itself in a couple of different ways. For example, when you try to set your Moment Connection Start and End the only option is None. Another indication of the problem will be that your Settings > Structural Settings > Symbolic Representation Settings dialog fields are all grayed out.
This will happen if you are working on a project that wasn't started with a Revit Structure template (using a Revit Architecture one, for example). By default, these templates will not contain some of the symbol families used in Revit Structure. To enable the functionality, load the following families into your Revit Structure project:
- Connection-Brace-Angle.rfa
- Connection-Brace-Kicker.rfa
- Connection-Brace-Parallel.rfa
- Connection-Column-Default.rfa
- Connection-Column-Filled Triangle.rfa
- Connection-Column-Plate.rfa
- Connection-Column-Vertical Plates.rfa
- Connection-Moment-Filled.rfa
- Connection-Moment-NotFilled.rfa
By default, these families will be located at C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Autodesk/RST 2010/Imperial Library/Annotations/Structure.
Once the families are loaded, the functionality should work as expected.
