The other day, a interesting question came accross my desk. A customer was looking for a explaination of a new feature in Autodesk Revit 2011 products that is listed in the help file called "Levels of Detail (Adaptive to Zoom)".
You can view the help file page online here. At first, I thought that this might have something to do with the detail level (Course, Medium, Fine) in a view, but that did not sound right. After doing a little digging (and talking with our developers). I found out what it is all about.
This feature is a framework that allows using different tessellations of faces and edges at different zoom levels. The idea is that at larger zooms you need fewer triangles/line segments to achieve necessary visual quality while at the same time allowing for finer tessellations to be used when user zooms in on some small detail.
The end result is better performance at larger zooms and better visual quality at smaller ones. Nothing to do with Detail level at all! The feature is currently being used in drawing only, printing and export are not affected. It is on by default and you don't have to do anything to enable it. It was designed to be completely transparent, ideally you shouldn’t notice anything other than performance improvements :).
Let me know if you have noticed this little gem in Revit 2011.
