The following post is another one from one of our Technical Specialists, Chris Aquino. Thanks Chris!
When creating a new parameter or formula for a parameter, you sometimes get an error message that looks like the one below:
I would first make sure that the Parameter or Formula meets the Syntax Requirements for Revit.
However, if you're anything like me, in that you are a "Copy and Paste Enthusiast", there may be a different problem.
The issue is that Revit does not understand the slanted quotes that some programs *cough* Microsoft Word! *cough* uses.
The formulas below look the same yet only the top one works correctly:
text_file_lookup("Flange - Slip-on - Steel - Class 150.csv", "HDia" , 0', ND)
text_file_lookup(“Flange - Slip-on - Steel - Class 150.csv”, “HDia” , 0’, ND)
Fortunately the fix is simple; in most word processing applications, disabling the slanted quotes is in the Auto Correct settings. Below are 3 of the more common applications:
Word:
File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > Autoformat as you Type
Then clear the box next to {"Straight quotes" with “smart quotes”}.
Open Office:
AutoReplace > Custom Quotes
Pages:
Preferences >Auto Correction
Here is video of the behavior:
